Born in Brisbane/Meanjin in 1979, Nick Birch grew up in Noosa Heads before returning to Brisbane in 1997 to complete a Bachelor of Arts in Screen Production.
Nick’s career in TV production was cut short in 2012 due to illness and he began his battle with chronic treatment-resistant major depressive disorder and chronic anxiety.
After a hiatus from media, and without creative outlet, Nick dedicated a great amount of time to creative therapy. Painting and drawing are a form of catharsis to aid his recovery, which has been long and arduous.
After many different medications, therapies and hospital stays, Nick is now a stay-at-home dad and father of three and completed a Master of Creative Enterprise with Distinction.

This artwork is about depression and feeling the darkness, even while all the colours of the world blow right past you. It's an umbrella, shielding you from life’s diverse delights. Some of it gets on you at times, but it never really gets in you, and it washes off again like rain.
