Based in Melbourne/Naarm, Emma Thompson is a figurative artist who works with oil paints. Through her depiction of animals, Emma portrays her nuanced experiences of mental health and recovery.
Emma lives with an eating disorder and depression that presents itself on and off like waves through her life. Emma uses her art to document and process her recovery challenges. She finds comfort in expressing complex or painful experiences when the right words can be hard to find.
A cockatoo holds up a white hospital blanket in an act of surrender. This painting represents the terror and sadness in surrendering all control over my body to my care team. It was this brave, daily choice to surrender that eventually lead me towards a now full and meaningful life. Cockatoos are social, not afraid to use their voice, playful, and affectionate, all qualities I strove towards as I fully surrendered control.
