Karen is an artist based in the Redlands who works with acrylics, gouache, watercolour, mixed media, and collage on paper and canvas. In addition to experiencing her own mental health challenges for 30 years, Karen is also a carer. Recently being diagnosed with AuDHD (autism and ADHD) has helped her understand why she does the things she does in relation to mental health.

Karen is currently experimenting with deconstructing natural and manmade objects, while centring bold colours and solid lines. Two of her artworks were recently exhibited in Milan, Italy for the Paralympic Games, alongside other countries. This year, Karen joined Access Arts' Brisbane Outsider Artists group, and is preparing to exhibit in more upcoming exhibitions.

This piece reminds me of just how much joy I can find in the simple things, which elevate my depressed mood. I visited Kalbar Sunflower Festival for the first time this year, enjoying the beautiful flowers and the experience of being surrounded by happy people everywhere. Attending the event with friends, I felt a sense of belonging; part of this relaxing community. 'Sunflower in a Rainbow' honours my connection to prioritising things that make me smile, lifting my mood when anxiety and depression try to keep me down.
