Spring Magic

Sue’s primary practice is acrylic and mixed media paintings, but she also enjoys charcoal drawing, oils, soft pastels, and watercolour painting. Her other interests lie in mixed media sculptures, often pairing wood with found objects - her small contribution to reducing landfill.

As a self-taught artist who sees drawings and paintings in everything she looks at, Sue dreams about art becoming her full-time career. This desire has become even more pronounced in recent years since facing her own mortality. In 2020, Sue was hospitalised due to a life-threatening medical incident, resulting in her withdrawing from a Master of Visual Arts.

Over the past two years, I have traversed insurmountable trauma - the discovery of unfathomable betrayal by my husband of 35 years and father of my children, followed by the unexpected passing of my mum. Immediately after, I experienced a torn retina and learned I am at 95 percent risk of a heart attack. I found expressing my pain through art only compounded these traumas, so I have since immersed myself in nature -  trying to return to the colourful person I once was.
