At 16 an art teacher told Hayley she wasn’t creative and so she spent the next 20 years frustrated, anxious and resentful, excluded from her natural means of expression. Eventually she found a passion for photography as it gave her a way to engage with the world, yet a camera to hide behind.
Through her photographic artworks, a blend of self-portraits and photos from her travels, Hayley found a way to transmute her feelings into stories. These stories provide a doorway to escape into other more interesting realities, where people and the natural environment coexist harmoniously with just a touch of magic.

Silenced is for all who have been abused and are forced to stay silent while the abuser is free to abuse again and again.
I wanted this image to resemble a painting because abusers are often incapable of seeing their victims in 3D; lacking the empathy that gives people substance and validity. By painting her mouth closed she is drained of colour and dimension.
Silenced is a self-portrait photograph and the painting-like effect was created using Photoshop brushes and filters.
