Paperbarks

Born in Brisbane and currently residing in Cleveland, Darryl's artistic practice began in earnest after moving to New Zealand to be closer to his children in 2001. For the next 16 years, Darryl continued painting and selling his works, becoming well-known for his coastal scenes and beachscapes. Upon returning to Australia, Darryl won first prize in the Wide Bay Bendigo Bank art prize and has been a finalist in numerous other awards including the Mainland Art Prize and the Cleveland Art Awards. Darryl enjoys the opportunity to create commissioned portraits, in addition to contemporary and modern works.

I was given a large canvas and wondered what to paint. I have always loved paperbark trees, so away I went. I decided to use the natural texture and have them reflected in the pond. I enjoyed painting the boys wading through the pond, capturing their reflection as well. This piece features plenty of pallet knife work, alongside painted details.
