Nan's Hen & Chicks

Danielle Hodgson is an avid nature lover with an ability to artistically express her passion and background in ecology onto the canvas through visual art. She is known for taking organic shapes and pushing them into abstract compositions, illustrating energy and enticing curiosity. 

Diagnosed with schizophrenia at age 27, Danielle struggled with her sense of purpose as she could no longer work as an ecologist. Instead, she has found solace and healing through art-making. As a new mum she is also navigating parenthood in all its ups and downs and is learning to embrace each moment through a renewed lens of loving connection. Danielle is a proud advocate for complex mental health issues and hopes to inspire others.

This oil painting depicts a succulent (commonly known as 'hen & chicks') which I found in my beloved nan's garden at the family farm in Tenterfield. The beautiful contrasting hues of green, teal, and orange highlight the symmetry of its fleshy leaves, bringing depth and life to the composition. It invites contemplation of beauty in simplicity found in nature, whilst representing intergenerational love and maternal connection. This piece has taken on a new level of meaning since I became a new mother.
