My Reflection Asks For A Break
Lani is a Brisbane-based artist and registered art therapist who follows curiosity wherever it wanders. Her work lives in the space between daydream and detail - where playful marks, repeating archetypal characters, and quiet whimsical humour coexist. Guided more by intuition than instruction, Lani treats the creative process like a conversation: sometimes thoughtful, sometimes mischievous, always sincere and honest. Working with coloured pencils and biro, Lani explores ideas around faith, identity, meaning-making, mental health, morality, and observations of daily life. She invites viewers to slow down, look twice, and find their own small moments of wonder tucked between the mundane.

This drawing deals with ego and self-importance; with success comes the temptation to navel gaze. I drew my own reflection having enough of me and needing a break. The clocks give a clue: one is keeping time (the time I finished the artwork) and the other is fragmented; it's past, it no longer makes sense. The prison stripes indicate that I am chained to reflecting, but my past self is in white - she's free from ego, free from my temptations.
