Mountain Dreaming

Sophie Lee is an artist based in Meanjin (Brisbane) whose work spans across painting, drawing, and mixed media. Her practice explores the interplay between internal and external environments, drawing on natural spaces like trees, mountains, and coastlines.

Driven by experimentation, Sophie's work moves between realism and abstract impressionism. She’s influenced by the ethos and aesthetic of street art, punk, comics, zines, and the expressive creativity of her young child.

Educated at the Griffith University Queensland College of Art and Design, Sophie’s work has been exhibited across Australia. She has been recognised as a finalist in the Feel Good Art Prize and Brain Art and Writing Competition, Reader’s Choice in the Big Day Art Award, and as a Homiens promoted artist.

I look back fondly at the many times I spent visiting Queensland's Granite Belt and Scenic Rim. To me, mountains are a symbol of returning to the quietness of nature; of weekends, holidays, and time spent with family and friends. Pink and blue washes meet serrated mountain ridges – and it feels like coming home.
