K. Mills is an artist from Ipswich who works in different mediums of art and photography.
Art was originally a hobby and creative outlet for self-care but in 2023 the artist experienced her first episode of depression/anxiety and used art as a part of her journey of recovery for hope and healing.
This is her second year exhibiting as part of Recovered Futures and in 2024 she has focussed on themes of environment and recovery, exploring how colour and nature impact mental health and in turn can be healing.
She hopes to convey art as a shared experience, where those creating and those viewing can be supported on their journey of recovery and healing and recognition that you are not alone.
Inspired by a photograph taken on a carefree day in nature, I captured a family of kookaburras by the water and grass. The vibrant colours and the soothing impact of nature on my mental health struck me deeply. I overlaid the image onto a black background—not to be morbid, but to symbolise mental health. The kookaburras and green grass represent the beauty of nature and its healing power. The world is full of beauty; seek out the environment that makes your heart sing.
