After suffering corporate burnout, then a hand injury at work a few months later, SammyBou’s life spiralled into despair - feeling hopeless that she no longer had value or purpose in the world.
SammyBou was left with a completely broken nervous system and debilitating physical symptoms, obliterated mental health and verging on homelessness. Left feeling dismissed by the mental health system, with treating doctors declaring “It’s just anxiety”, Sammy’s entire existence crumbled.
Creating art became Sammy’s therapy and helped her through those dark times.
SammyBou is currently studying a Diploma of Visual Arts at TAFE Queensland. Studying art has reignited a sense of purpose and passion to create beautiful things and inspired SammyBou to open a “makers space” business sometime in the future.
My art journey has been one of learning and I love trying new styles and techniques. I wanted to try a more realistic watercolour painting and after buying some juicy kiwifruit I was inspired to try something a bit out of my comfort zone. This required patience and working in layers, ensuring to add the fuzzy texture of the kiwi skin details as best I could with my shaky nervous system. I really enjoyed the challenge though.
