Hayes normally creates colourful intuitive abstract work with mixed media, but sometimes enjoys doing representational pieces. His creativity, coupled with professional medical help, has been a major tool in his recovery from alcoholism, clinical depression, anxiety, and mild psychosis.

Hayes has been painting casually for about ten years, but has become more prolific since exhibiting a painting with Recovered Futures in 2024/25. He is very encouraged and grateful to participate again this year.

On a few occasions, I was walking through the grounds of a hospital were I was miserably employed at the time. I encountered a beautiful spider on its magnificent golden web. It fascinated me and I could almost hear it saying, "paint me, please!" So very bravely, I did!
