Flight Path

Deb Chilton is an artist who identifies as being disabled. She has struggled with mental health issues from her early teens, the result of living in a world that wasn’t created for her. Deb has spent her whole life being creative - a self-confessed 'doodler' - but it wasn't until a disability support worker said, 'these are not doodles, but saleable art’, that she began to see her creations in a new light. 

In 2013, Deb was part of a leadership program which introduced her to the disabled art movement. Since then, she has established her art practice - studying at the Brisbane Institute of Art and exhibiting in various art galleries. Today, Deb's practice focuses on print and design.

This monoprint shows butterflies taking flight - emerging from the darkness of a winter forest to the promise of new life that spring brings. Living with disabilities and poor mental health, I experience additional challenges. Day to day, I face the challenge of the chrysalis - choosing to push through and take flight.
