Rachel is an emerging mixed-media artist and criminologist based in Brisbane/Meanjin. Her academic research focuses on miscarriages of justice, while her art explores human resilience and social justice.
She began painting seriously in 2021 as part of her recovery from a traumatic brain injury, which left her with post-concussion syndrome and its aftereffects.
Her work ranges from expressive abstracts to realistic figurative paintings, using a vibrant palette, materials, and techniques symbolic of meaning to tell narratives of hope and optimism.
Rachel has been a finalist in several arts prizes and exhibits widely in Queensland and interstate. Recently, she received a Highly Commended at the 2024 Aspects Art Show and won the People’s Choice at the 2023 Lethbridge Small Scale Art Award.

In this painting, I explore the loss of self and the weight of feeling adrift. A vibrant watercolour is overtaken by thick swathes of paint, symbolising a mental fog that offers only fleeting moments of clarity. The upward-dripping elements aim to disorient and destabilise, reflecting the experience of navigating uncertain times.
Despite this, the bursts of colour and light represent resilience and hope, reminding us that beauty and strength persist even in challenging moments.
