Dean Crozier, a Brisbane-based queer artist creates art in abstract styles and utilises art as an expression of his life experience. He works mainly in acrylic mediums allowing for bold and strong colours that suit the subjects of the work.
Many pieces created by Dean evolve from emotional situations that arise from his continuing work on self-acceptance and building personal strength. While struggling with depression his art is a tool for recovery, providing a way to express the inner turmoil when other forms of expression failed to convey his mental state.
Over the past few years, more positivity has emerged through the subjects, as he adjusted his views to better understand himself and the world in which he moves.
The blue eyes draw the viewer into this painting of a young man wrapped in a red scarf. Created using one-centimetre square boxes, each coloured individually to make the final image.
I was exploring the false narrative that many - including myself - have regarding self-worth, especially when struggling with mental health issues. The guy in front of us is always more confident, more appealing, but this is a distorted abstract view.
