Vanessa Harvey started selling her art in a mental health hospital in 2016. Her room on the ward came to be called, The Gallery. She found that she could relate to others and their feelings through her portraits.
Vanessa also uses the expressions of portraiture to try to grow a deeper understanding of feelings she experiences, as connecting to this can be difficult at times. Vanessa uses a variety of media to convey her messages but her subject matter generally revolves around portraiture. More recently she has been using paint to explore her experience with mental illness.

The figure represents me as the butterfly and is a combination of the Australian and New Zealand 'Vanessa' butterflies, which additionally echoes my mixed heritage. This painting is my memory of when I was held against my will and put in an isolation room. Being diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder left me feeling isolated, trapped and vulnerable. I used these colours to bring this memory to life.
