Ellena is an emerging Brisbane-based fine artist who works primarily with rescued and acrylic paint on canvas. Following two strokes caused by injuries sustained in a fatal bus accident, Ellena was forced to leave her career as a senior user interface artist.

Facing the profound challenge of rebuilding her independence and identity as a professional, a wife, and a mother, Ellena turned to art. Creativity became both therapy and purpose throughout her 18 month recovery, supporting her journey to regain vision, cognition, vocabulary, and hand-eye coordination; ultimately reshaping her view of clinical spaces.

Inspired by flora and fauna, Ellena's vibrant works bring warmth, humanity, and occasionally gentle humour to clinical environments, transforming sterile spaces into places of comfort and connection.

'Bear Minimum' explores the power of reduction, stripping an image back to its essential form while retaining presence and impact. A metallic green brick bear sits alone against a pink-red background, inviting reflection on simplicity, memory, and perception. Created with recycled household paint, the work embraces limitation as a creative strength. For me, it also speaks to mental health - finding value in what remains when excess is removed, and recognising that less can still be enough.
