Simone Sequeira is an emerging mixed-media artist based in Meanjin/Brisbane, passionately advocating for the destigmatisation of psychosocial disabilities. Her journey with mental health, marked by complex trauma, profoundly informs her artistic practice, which includes printmaking, embroidery, and textured acrylic painting. Art therapy has served as a sanctuary, allowing Simone to reclaim her identity as a neurodivergent queer individual while navigating bipolar disorder, anxiety, and depression.
In late 2022, she faced a stage IV cancer diagnosis, presenting a new set of health challenges. Simone found solace in watercolour and shihiko during chemotherapy, processing pain through mindfulness. Now in remission, she celebrates life via radical self-acceptance and a renewed purpose through her art making. Inspired to continue her work breaking down barriers for the mental health and LGBTQI+ communities, Simone plans to host regular craft circles and pursue a career in diversional therapy, aligning with her values and illustrating how art can foster connection, healing, and empowerment.

I made this for my best friend, Trisha. She loves her ragdoll cat and we have bonded through a shared love of crafting and giving each other things we have made. Pure joy and love were poured into this piece.
Trish’s friendship endures through the toughest of journeys - through hospital treatment- true lifelong connection can arise. I found my soul sister in the darkest of times and I am so grateful. We encourage each other to push forward and hold hope for the future.
