A Silent Promise
Nilima Harjal, an Indian-born artist who now calls Brisbane home, embraces whichever path life takes her on; firm in her determination to live fully, no matter which age or stage. She discovered painting in her 60s; a joyful passion that has lit up her life ever since.
Through all her travels, Nilima paints people and places that have touched her heart; creating bold, colourful, and deeply personal art. In just over a decade, Nilima has had two solo exhibitions and her art has featured in Brisbane City Hall, West End cafés, and even hospital wings at St Vincent’s and St Andrew’s. She has sold work, gifted work, and been delighted to see her paintings find homes with art lovers across Brisbane. At 73, Nilima's journey continues unabated.
This painting depicts the whispers of the heart between mother and daughter, through a quiet language of affection. Their silhouettes overlap, suggesting they are two parts of the same story. The daughter is a beautiful reflection of her mother; quiet and intimate with a shared silence, while the mother is positioned as an embodiment of peace. Simply being together is a safe harbour for both women.
