Francie Evans is an emerging contemporary figurative and still life artist based in Brisbane/Meanjin.
Her works are typically grounded in realism and showcase a soft luminance and painterly brushstrokes reminiscent of the Impressionists, Pre-Raphaelites, and Romantics.
She began oil painting in 2021. Working as a medical scientist, and a mother to two young sons, she finds painting to be an opportunity to practice both mindfulness and escapism.
Over time, a series of works emerged known as ‘Sad Girl’ series, reflected in the faces of the women she was painting; Francie began to process and understand the anxiety and depression she was experiencing. Through it, Francie seeks to capture this feeling of freedom and inspire others to find their own paths towards self-discovery and growth.

Life is hard. Struggles with mental health, amidst a cost-of-living crisis and within our dysfunctional system of capitalism, are all the more real and challenging. Depression and anxiety can feel like a storm raging around us, of which there is no escape.
This work signifies how suffocating life can feel in the depths of mental illness; continuing to fight and reaching out for help are the bravest things we can do.
