Julie Gilroy is an abstract artist, based in Brisbane/Meanjin.
Julie’s compositions speak of a moment in time, combining all the elements it takes to arrive at that moment. The fragments represent people, places, actions and events that create the fingerprint of our lives. The layering and colours build the emotion of the arrival, with a fluidity of how easily it could shift and arrive at an alternative picture and place.
Julie predominantly works in the medium of archival colour pencil, honing her technique over the years to elevate the sharp lines and colour saturation. Working on wood board is central to her process. The natural grain and imperfections break through the pencil, offsetting the exacting nature of the medium.

'Mood Journal' pieces together fragments of my previous artwork compositions, picking out moments in time. It shows glimpses into different emotions and creates a journal with them. The artwork begins to find the balance between those opposing images and emotions, inviting an even deeper sense of knowing oneself and each of our many facets. Repeating some sections from a different perspective gives validation and meaning to each of those thoughts, like unpicking your mind.
