Based in Melbourne/Naarm, Emma Thompson is a figurative artist who works with oil paints. Through her depiction of animals, Emma portrays her nuanced experiences of mental health and recovery.
Emma lives with an eating disorder and depression that presents itself on and off like waves through her life. Emma uses her art to document and process her recovery challenges. She finds comfort in expressing complex or painful experiences when the right words can be hard to find.
This painting captures the concept of not knowing who you are anymore after coming away from a period of pain, when you feel different from your old self before you became unwell. When you can’t recognise yourself it’s a very confusing feeling. There is a sense of loss, captured by the dying flowers. Has this pain changed the essence of me, or maybe am I more me than ever before?
