By Lauren Sims

Lauren's journey to becoming a professional artist has had many stops and starts, but what keeps her motivated is a desire to inspire others with mental illness to embrace art as a courageous, personal form of therapy. This has been Lauren's experience since being diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder.

Lauren has a keen interest in the reciprocal, supportive relationships between pets and people. She loves creating commissions of pets and support animals, which are completed in acrylic on canvas.

Lauren says she wouldn’t have been able to get to this point of clarity in her life without the support of many people, including her psychiatrist, and those who make the Recovered Futures Art Exhibition come together each year. She remains so grateful for the experience.

Finn is a support dog for my lovely friend, Emma, and in many ways, Emma is also a support human for Finn. Emma has experienced challenges with mental health and trauma, yet continues to live with resilience - working hard and buying a unit for herself and Finn. She is a beautiful soul to be around and wins the hearts of many as she wheels Finn in his pram to the local café each morning for coffee.
