"This artwork started off as a journal entry. Journalling has become integral to my health and mental wellbeing. Most journal entries are in response to identifying and expressing the many triggers of my functional neurological disorder symptoms."
Brisbane artist Naomi Becker spent 17 years as an educator before being diagnosed with functional neurological disorder. Her mental health deteriorated. Faced with a new diagnosis and an uncertain future, Naomi is finding strength in reconnecting with her artistic roots - which lay dormant for many years. Naomi works mostly with textile.
Reflecting on her lived experience with mental health, Naomi finds comfort in writing; capturing the emotions of guilt, despair and the discombobulation one encounters with mental fragility.
At the heart of Naomi’s creative process is confronting her warped sense of self, rooted in distrust and overthinking, negating the intuitive process. Laid bare, exposed and vulnerable, Naomi is learning to listen.
