Gum Tree
John is a Brisbane/Meanjin-based photographic artist who lives with depression and social anxiety. In his early fifties he discovered that he had complex trauma and has recently found out he is neurodivergent.
Due to his neurodivergence, John approaches photography in his own way, adopting what is known by some as photographic expressionism. Through this expressionism, he has tapped into a newfound joy he has never experienced before. Where he found more traditional methods of photography restricting, expressionism has allowed him to play and be truly creative - something John will be forever grateful for.

‘Gum Tree’ is part of my interpretive artwork series focusing on trees. ‘Gum Tree’ explores my fascination with Australian flora and my interest in the asymmetric nature of Australian trees. As a final step, I imagine how the tree would look in a parallel world where everything is the same except how we see colour.
