The Reaping (Self-Portrait)
Arielle Rose Hankinson is a Brisbane-based mixed media artist whose practice delves into the inner landscape of the psyche through both traditional and digital mediums. Her work radiates intensity, defined by bold contrasts, intricate linework, and richly textured detail.
Influenced by artists such as Del Kathryn Barton, Hilma af Klint, Francis Bacon, and the Surrealist movement, Arielle creates striking pieces that juxtapose beauty with decay, and tenderness with morbidity. Her practice explores themes of femininity, sexuality, trauma, and mortality, transforming psychological pain into aesthetic artefacts. In doing so, she invites viewers to not only engage with the artwork itself but also reflect on their own subconscious.

In this piece, I explore the icon of the hare - its mystical symbolism and my personal connection to its stillness and wisdom, underpinned by an anxious energy that drives its instinct for survival. Through a gestural, intuitive technique, I confront psychological pain and transform it into an aesthetic artefact.
