By Joanne Braddy

Joanne Braddy creates emotional self-portraits through painting and ceramics; each artwork a new emotional journey she bravely embarks upon. Joanne finds channelling her emotions through her artwork painful at times, yet she works tirelessly to reveal the beauty hidden within. She sees her art as pieces of her soul infused into the canvas.

Joanne has lived experience of depression. Through her art, she expresses the great courage that must be summoned to push through the darkness of her mind to see the light. Through her art, Joanne demonstrates that painful emotions are nothing to be ashamed of; they are valid and essential to our life journey - beautiful because they are part of us all.

Over the years as an artist, I’ve developed a unique voice—one I wanted to use to reduce stigma around mental health. However, I often struggled to find a space where I could truly be myself, a place to freely express the emotions that flow through me.

I'm not interested in trying to fit in or conforming to expectations. I want to create and exhibit work that is authentic and unfiltered.
