When Company Calls

Brisbane-based artist Giovanna Scott is known for her distinctive acrylic paintings, enriched with hand-painted paper collages and free-form stitching. Her work embraces a perfectly imperfect style, capturing the beauty of everyday life while evoking nostalgia and treasured memories. 

After two decades of juggling a teaching career with family life, Giovanna chose to devote more time to supporting her family and caring for her 22-year-old-son, who lives with severe autism. Art has since become a refuge and source of renewal - helping her heal from the challenges of raising a child with very explosive behaviours, while nurturing her own creative spirit. Through her practice, Giovanna hopes to reconnect viewers with the innocence and wonder of a carefree childhood.

I created this artwork to celebrate those ordinary moments that we sometimes take for granted. Like the unexpected guest, the last-minute invite, the spontaneous extended family long lunch. It's these moments I treasure most and insist be taken from the ordinary to the extraordinary. The isolation that comes with caring for a severely autistic child forces you to create a wonderland in your own home.
