Sculpted in Thought
Lainie is an 82-year-old artist who has been painting since childhood. Working primarily in acrylics, oil pastels, and charcoal, her work expresses bold, abstract reflections of her inner world.
Growing up in Yorkshire, England, Lainie's sister Josie and Lainie often painted together until she emigrated to Australia in 1971. In Australia, Lainie deepened her interest in art, studying Fine Arts and Ceramics in Wollongong. Now living in Brisbane/Meanjin, she continues to experiment with new techniques and materials.
Art has helped Lainie navigate her own struggles with depression and the profound grief of losing her beloved son, Andrew. Each piece is a quiet act of healing, remembrance, and hope.
'Sculpted in Thought' is inspired by the quiet presence of sculptural figures near Brisbane’s GPO - forms that seem paused in time, caught in silent reflection. This abstract interpretation captures a moment of inward stillness, rendered in layered greens to evoke growth, thought, and quiet strength. The figure is not defined by features, but by feeling - a visual meditation on the sculptural beauty of contemplation and the way public art can anchor private thoughts in the heart of a city.
