German-born Mia moved to Australia in 2005 with her husband and young son, leaving her family behind to support her partner’s dream of living and working abroad. They quickly fell in love with Sydney and decided to make it their permanent home, eventually becoming Australian citizens together with their two sons.

For many years, Mia and her family embraced all the joys of their new life. However, during the pandemic her marriage took a turn, leading her into an intense and toxic relationship. This period marked the beginning of her first experiences with serious mental health struggles, resulting in hospitalisation and ongoing treatment.

Through art, Mia has begun her path to healing. Creativity has helped her rediscover the light and colour of life after a long period of darkness.

About a year ago I adopted my cat, Noodle, from the Dakabin Rescue Shelter. At the time, she was extremely anxious, and I was living with severe depression - we became the perfect match. We supported one another, demonstrating true 'girl power'. This painting shows Noodle daydreaming in her favourite spot, enjoying the comfort of her new home. I’m so proud of how far she’s come - she’s learned to trust and, in turn, has taught me to slow down, be mindful, laugh, and find joy in life’s simple moments.
