Daniel McGovern was born on the North Coast of New South Wales, before moving to the Gold Coast in the mid-90s. Growing up amongst the beauty of the Australian elements, flora and fauna had a strong effect on Daniel's creativity and regard for nature. But Daniel's lived experience has taken him to places where he has been far removed from his inspirations. Having been removed from inspirations has fuelled in Daniel a love of nature and the creative process. Daniel is pleased to share a unique and passionate view of his creative process.
"A friend prompted me to paint a bird that I love and the piece delivered an abstract adolescent yellow tailed cockatoo.
This piece was inspired by my observation of juvenile cockatoo’s playing and eating amongst the Casuarina trees around the beaches of Kirra on the southern Gold Coast. My aim was to capture the jovial character of the young cockatoo, by using strong earthy colours against the light blue which denoted the wisdom and beauty of the species with the attitude and playfulness of their character.
To me, the black cockatoo represents that despite all of life’s lessons and challenges - which can be dark and felt so deeply - that true beauty and strength can be seen in the way you let your character show through, being a little cheeky and always willing to have fun."
