"I created this painting as a compelled response to and extension of Untitled #1. This work rediscovers and restores a fragmented self, characterised, at once, by defencelessness and naive idealism, by a fear of her environment and an often-misplaced trust in its residents.

Through an uncontradictory affair between empathy for adults incapacitated of caregiving, and a healing loyalty to the repressed self’s right to care, this painting re-meets the repressed inner child."

Saloni Saran is a Meanjin-based artist originally from India, who uses visual arts as a vehicle to reconcile her diasporic identity with transgenerational relational traumas buried in political and economic discourse. Saloni uses oils on wood and works with its materiality of trace evidence to explore the body’s memory of trauma.

Through a gothic palette, symbols of affect and emotional realism, Saloni composes haunting dreamscapes that capture triggers that can be grasped, retraced and resolved like puzzle pieces that make up a fragmented identity.

Working from Lucia Cappacchione’s model of recovering the inner child, Freud’s conceptualisation of repetition compulsion and the framing language of noir films, Saloni’s paintings reconcile the realities of the haunted inner child and the survived adult.
