Gulnoza Akhmedova is a 24-year-old fibre artist, operating under the moniker ‘Panoplee’. She is drawn to the history of fibre art as an intergenerational, gendered cultural practice and as a tool for storytelling and connection.
Gulnoza has been an avid crafter since the age of 12 and enjoys the soothing and therapeutic nature of the repetitive motions associated with crochet, knitting and embroidery. She has recently exhibited at Side Gallery as part of the Brisbane Art and Design Festival.
"This piece is a reflection on the tension between our internal and external self. The disconnect with how we think we present ourselves compared the way we are perceived by others can be a great source of discomfort and lead to feelings of inauthenticity or being misunderstood.
Here, this concept is presented with a sense of ambiguity – is the mysterious black figure inundated by the sea of bright, vivid colours around them, or are they at peace with elements out of their control?"
